With over 25 local, organic farmers, Moss Street Market is Victoria’s true farmers market. The market also has over 75 craft and food vendors, all offerings made and sold directly by the local producer. The market is complimented by local musicians, great coffee, special event days, and the annual Moss Street Paint-In. With a little something for everyone, Moss Street Market is a favourite of its Fairfield neighbors and greater Victoria. The opening bell at 10am on May 4^th will start Moss Street Market’s 22nd season.

When? Regular Season: Every Saturday from May 4 to October 26, 10am to 2pm. Half Markets: Every Saturday in April, 10am to noon.

Moss Street Market pumps $3.6 million through local economy!

Moss Street Community Market is a significant economic player in the local economy, injecting nearly $3.6 million annually into the local economy, according to a recent study.

“Although people know the market is a great place to buy fresh, local food,” said Kyle Goulet, the market manager, “the results of this study help us communicate to others how valuable the farmers’ market is to our community.”

About 126,000 people visit the farmers’ market annually and on the day of the study, July 7, 2012 over 4500 people visited the market. About 257 of these visitors participated in the survey. Over two thirds of shoppers visit the market either ‘regularly’ (almost weekly) or ‘frequently’ (2-3 times per month).

The Moss Street Market is participating in a province-wide study of the economic and community benefits of farmers markets. “Farmers’ markets continue to serve as the face of farming in BC,” said Elizabeth Quinn, Executive Director of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets. “There has been significant growth in the number and vitality of farmers’ markets in BC and it is important to understand not only what they contribute but also how much they contribute to local neighbourhoods, cities, and towns,” she explained.

Dr. David Connell, a professor from the University of Northern BC who is leading the project, added, “This project builds upon the results of a similar study we did in 2006. At the end of this project we will be able to compare our results to see how much has changed over the past six years.” The results of this year’s assessment show that the Moss Street Market has grown significantly since 2006.

Moss Street Market vendors make, bake and grow everything they sell. Farmers bring quality, seasonal food, picked at the height of its natural harvest. Artisans offer unique, locally made crafts. Food vendors serve a wide variety of mouth-watering local foods. Moss Street Market boasts a wonderful array of different food varieties and takes considerable pride in the quality, and regional proximity from which the food comes. The Market also has great live music and a free children’s craft tent.

The project is carried out by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets in collaboration with Dr. David Connell, a professor in the School of Environmental Planning at the University of Northern British Columbia. Financial assistance was provided by participating farmers’ markets, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC, and Vancity Community Foundation.

To officially start our regular season and celebrate Moss Street Market’s 20th anniversary on Saturday Mayor Dean Fortin will be at the market to read the City of Victoria proclamation stating May 5, 2012 has been designated Moss Street Market Day and ring the opening bell at 10am!

A reminder that the Moss Street Market Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 25, 1pm-4pm in the Garry Oak Room of the Sir James Douglas School. Vendors planning to return for this season need to attend this meeting to sign up. If you cannot make this date please notify us ahead of time.
